This project was developed in the context of a prestigious design competition commissioned by the Flemish government in 2009. The construction site is located on a former railway yard owned by NMBS, on the eastside of Leuven. Besides 30 dwellings for the elderly and disabled, the project also contains retail space and an art academy on the groundfloor and a large sublevel parking lot spanning the entire Blauwput Square.

A singular four-storey volume defines the main facade of the aforementioned square. It creates a transitional zone between the square and neighbouring streets through staircases, ramps and passages emphasized by a canopy. The transparent base of the building contrasts with the colourful HPL panelling lining the upper floors.

The colour palette was distilled from a pigment analysis in the near vicinity of the project site. The pigment’s complement was used as a base for the panelling’s colour range.

Resulting in a dynamic mix of blue and green springtime colours, the volume stands out in a complementary way.
